The Anatomy Scan

Apologies for the lack of a blog last week. I took a three-day course through work which was incredibly valuable, but it also made for a busy week, so blogging wasn’t a top priority.

Anyway, right after Christmas and deciding on Rowan’s name, Nick and I had our first anatomy/3D scan. This one was particularly special as Carrie, my mother-in-law, was able to join us.

There were a ton of measurements the ultrasound tech had to take, and when he finished those after about 30-40 minutes, the doctor came in and did more. I never expected we’d get to see Rowan for so long!

The tech and the doctor both pointed out all his different body parts (some more recognizable than others). Though we already know he’s a boy, the tech did have some trouble seeing his boy parts at first.

Rowan was being modest and had his hand between his legs for most of the scan. (Something, as you can imagine, that was joked about by Nick. I’ll leave the details to your imagination.) He did finally move his hand, though, and it was doubly confirmed we’re having a boy.

At one point, Rowan was punching and kicking so much, it looked like he was riding an invisible bicycle. It also amazed me because I felt absolutely none of what I was seeing on the screen. I do feel kicks here and there, but Rowan still has enough room that it’s not always consistent.

After the doctor came in, she confirmed everything was looking great, and Rowan was measuring about four days ahead.

While we get a picture at every ultrasound, we left with a whole slew of photos this time. Below are some of the best.

We’d get to see him on the 3D scan again soon, too, as we had to do a fetal EKG. More on that next week!
