Embryology Update

Like 2022, 19 eggs were harvested during my egg retrieval procedure and the numbers breakdown starting out was also pretty similar. The morning after, the clinic called with an update. Below is a comparison between my two procedures:

2023

  • 19 eggs collected
  • 13 mature enough to fertilize
  • 10 fertilized; 1 still had potential
  • Egg quality rating: Fair

2022

  • 19 eggs collected
  • 12 mature enough to fertilize
  • 9 fertilized; 1 still had potential
  • Egg quality rating: Poor

These numbers are incredibly similar. So much so, that I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little disappointed.

From the IVF support groups I belong to, I know that 19 is a good number. It’s just hard not to think back to how we started with 19 last time and got nothing. I also thought that doubling my meds and adding growth hormone might make me produce more, better quality eggs than in 2022.

I am encouraged that the egg quality rating is better this time around. I’m trying to be hopeful that will give the embryos the boost they need to make it to day five or six.

That should be when they call with our next update, but if they call earlier, I’ll know it’s likely to tell me there are less embryos than when we started.

I’ll provide another update on my usual blog day.
