After our appointment with Dr. W., Nick and I felt we had a solid plan. We decided to try a second round of IVF in early 2023. It was August 2022 when we crafted this plan.
Dr. G. had told us if we wanted to try again it needed to be sooner rather than later, because of my egg quality issues, but we really weren’t up for it again so soon.
After we found out about the insurance coverage, it made even more sense for us to wait until 2023. Waiting also allowed us to take out new FSAs, which we can use for some of the prescription drug costs.
Our thinking in August was we needed a couple of months to mentally, emotionally, and, for me, physically recover from our first IVF cycle and failure. It really is a lot to put your body through. Add the devastating blow of not getting any embryos, and the process feels even more taxing–both mentally and physically.
As I’ve discussed in the blog, going through a failed IVF cycle is a lot to take. It’s a grieving process. Grieving for the pregnancy you thought you were going to have. Grieving, in our case, what we thought was the potential for having a family.
Though we feel somewhat better about our chances in a second round, there are no guarantees. We know it’s an uphill battle (more on that next week), and we could go through everything again and end up with nothing, again. I genuinely don’t know how couples who go through multiple attempts do it. The highs and lows and heartache are a lot.
After learning about the insurance coverage in late 2022, Nick and I made some adjustments. We are still going to start a second IVF cycle soon and be flexible, depending on the results of that cycle. I’ll share more about what being flexible looks like, plus another big change we made, in the next blog.
