While there was at least one doctor’s appointment between the EKG and the growth scan, it was fairly routine and not much to write about. Usually at these in-between appointments, they’ll measure my belly and then use the doppler to hear Rowan’s heartbeat.
It would’ve been my 28-week appointment, and my belly was measuring at 30-31 weeks. The doc said one to two is the norm, and more than two is a little unusual and could mean he’s going to be a big baby.
Good thing the growth scan was right around the corner at 30 weeks.
The morning of the scan arrived, and it was with the incredibly cool 3-D ultrasound used for the anatomy scan and the EKG. Once again, I got a nice, long look at little Mr. Rowan.
Though maybe I shouldn’t say little…
The ultrasound tech was telling me all about the measurements as she was taking them. His head circumference was right at 12 inches. It was 95th percentile.
Which had me quipping, “I feel like some of my body parts aren’t going to appreciate that in a couple months.”
It also reminded me that my eldest nephew had a big head when he was born at 41 weeks (14”). We’re nearly at that size, and I still had 10 weeks to go!
As far as his weight, Rowan was already at 4 lbs. (87th percentile)! My “What to Expect” app said he should be about three.
It certainly had me thinking back to Nick’s and my discussions on how many kids we wanted (before we had any clue we’d need to do IVF). Those conversations typically went something like this:
Nick: I’d like to have three.
Me: How about two?
Nick: Three?
Me: Two…
Nick: How about we do what my parents did–have two and then 10 years later have another?
Me: How about–I’m the one who has to push these Viking babies out of her body, so we’ll have two, and then I’ll give you a we’ll see?
Nick (sensing this is the best deal he’s going to get): OK.
Viking baby indeed.
But a very cute Viking baby, according to this adorable ultrasound pic of his face!
