Real-Time Experience

Up until this point, this blog has mostly been retrospective. Sharing our story this way has allowed me to reflect on our journey and provide readers regular updates while currently going through everything.

The story from here on out will be as close to real time as I can get it. It still may be a couple of weeks behind at the beginning, but there’s usually enough in-between time from one procedure to the next where the blog will catch up and be current.

After we met with the second genetic counselor and had our first appointment with a new physician, Nick and I created our plan. We would try at least one more round of IVF, but we would wait until early 2023 to start. This allowed us to take the mental (and physical) break we both needed, as well as provided us time to save the funds we’d need, even with our insurance coverage.

A standard IVF cycle typically takes about three or four months to complete (i.e. get pregnant), depending on if additional procedures/treatments are required. Our first cycle was on track to be at the lower end of that timeline.

In our first cycle, we started the process in early April 2022. I had my egg retrieval procedure in late May. Had we gotten any viable embryos, it’s likely we would’ve had our frozen embryo transfer in early August.

Now that we’re at the end of January, we’re planning to start the next cycle in February/March. Because of some of the changes Dr. C. recommended for this cycle, the first part – the medications and lead up to egg retrieval – won’t take as long. More details on that in next week’s blog.

When there is down time, I plan to address some of the posts I’ve made on the IVF That Facebook page. With recent news events, there really is a lot to discuss in the world of fertility. Some of the topics can be controversial, and I’m going to do my best to address and share my opinions on these topics respectfully.
